A Paradise for Climbers

Climbing with the whole family

Climbing and via ferrata routes for the whole family in the mountain climbers‘ village of Weißbach: the Naturpark community in the Salzburger Saalachtal promises close to nature mountain experiences for young and old and genuine hospitality among mountain comrades.

“That was fantastic! Mum and the elder one were able to do this exercise all by themselves while Dad was under my watch,” Markus announces and my eyes shine with pride as I observe how both of them courageously and effortlessly climb up along the Top-Rope. After another couple of attempts it is time for the next challenge.

Die Zahme Gams – The Tame Chamois

The second part of the course leads us to the beginners‘ via ferrata ‘Zahme Gams’, which also begins in the Alpenverein climbing park. “This via ferrata has been specially designed for beginners and families and we will conquer the first 50 m today. All of you will get gloves and your own via ferrata set with two carrabiners to clip onto the steel rope. I will stay with the little one and Dad will be in a team with the elder. It is important that children are never left alone on the via ferrata. They will also be secured with a special safety rope by their adult team partner.“ Our little one follows him keenly and without fear along the steel rope and climbs higher and higher in the via ferrata. We climb, scale steps and stop on the steel rope at crossings until Markus says, “We’ll take a break here and then abseil one after another.”

Caught the climbing bug

Back at our start point it was clear to us all, “We have been infected by the climbing virus!” Markus laughs, “That happens to most people. The children could continue on Monday and Thursday as part of our summer programme. We’ll spend a morning in the climbing hall in Weißbach and we also go climbing on the rock. Meanwhile you parents could hire a via ferrata set in the village and complete the entire ‘Zahme Gams’ together. Or you could also book a course so that you can lead climbs in the future. There are so many climbing routes in Weißbach for different levels of ability.” A look at the climbing brochure confirms this and I say to my wife and children, laughing, “I think we‘ll become regular guests here in Weißbach and become really good climbers.“ Full of pride and enthusiasm we are excited as we spend the rest of the day dreaming of the future climbing adventures which await us.
