Juicy meadows, wonderful peace...
...and an imposing panorama of peaks - that is the alm summer in the Salzburger Saalachtal. It is time to forget everyday stress for a moment and tank new energy. Enjoy bread with bacon and a glass of cool buttermilk followed by a farmer´s doughnut straight out of the pan. If the farmer gets out his accordion, everything is perfect.
The alm summer has been a part of the agricultural year for centuries. The cattle are brought up to the alpine pastures in early summer where they are cared for from June to September by the alpine herdsmen. The working day of the people on the alm begins before sunrise with the milking of the cows. The fresh milk is brought down to the valley to be collected by the dairy. A few mountain farmers process the milk directly on the alm to produce alm butter or cheese.
Walkers and mountain climbers have always enjoyed feasting on the home-made alm products in Salzburger Land. Over the years and with the development of mountain tourism, managed alm huts and cosy snack stations have arisen. However, the warm hospitality on the alm has never changed over the course of time. Many Alm huts have the ”Alm Summer certificate“. This guarantees an authentic Alm experience.
