Enjoyment without borders
Natural history rarities such as the Lady’s Slipper, Turk’s Cap Lily or the Apollo Mountain butterfly demonstrate the interplay between the intact nature of the Seisenbergklamm and the traditional cultivated landscape. Nestled in the Salzburger limestone Alps, the Naturpark Weißbach and the Berchtesgaden National Park form a natural habitat which can be explored via an extensive hiking and cycling trail network or with the AlmErlebnisBus and the Almwandertaxi.
There is hardly any landscape zone which exhibits as many natural rarities in a relatively small area as the Naturpark Weißbach in the Salzburger Saalachtal. Rare plants, such as the Lady's Slipper, Arnica or Turk's Cap Lily, blossom on the traditionally cultivated alms and the diverse mountain meadows. The Apollo butterfly, serious endangered in Europe, flies over the flowering pastures; in the dense mixed mountain forests, deer find sufficient living space and in the Seisenbergklamm the deafening, raging, high-alpine water reigns supreme. All of this can be experienced on the well-developed hiking and themed trails and from rustic huts or romantic benches with a view. Guests with mountain- or e-mountain bikes are also very welcome here, as one of the goals of all the Austrian natural parks (there are 48 in total) is to achieve equality of nature conservation, relaxation, education and regional development. Across the board, the natural parks have dedicated themselves to preserving protected landscapes by considerate land usage and rural conservation. Also heavily committed to this principle is GF DI (FH) David Schuhwerk, who took over the responsibility for the care of the Naturpark in February of the jubilee year 2017 and will lead it into the future. “My goal is to increase the profile of Weißbach as a natural park community and mountain climbers' village and to highlight the unique features of our wonderful region“, says the passionate mountain sportsman.
Landscape Adventure path
A specially designed trail leads you on your stroll downhill from the Gasthof Hirschbichl or uphill from the Gasthof Lohfeyer and reveals the beauty of the landscape to you in the form of various stations to discover, feel, see and smell.
FOREST ADVENTURE PATH "WALDEN"
Discover the world of the forest with all your senses: this forest adventure path follows the tracks of wild animals, forest workers or philosophers over hill and dale; moss and shrubs and past little watercourses. On the path you will learn about life in the forest with a great deal of curiosity and with all your senses.
ADVENTURE GORGE PATH
The Natural Monument Seisenbergklamm offers, in addition to an incomparable natural spectacle, a lot of informative stations and an adventure, especially for families. Together with the gorge spirit you will experience the natural world and the fascination of water. You stroll along wooden walkways, past waterfalls and on wooden staircases into the dark gorge which allows hardly any sunlight in between its narrow rockfaces. A visit to the gorge takes about one hour. Hikers can use entry through the gorge as a starting point to access the extensive hiking trail network or return to Weißbach leisurely via the gorge return route. The gorge and the “Klammstüberl“ (a small cafe) are open from May to October. From June to October a torchlit hike with musical accompaniment takes place every Wednesday evening in the Seisenbergklamm.
NATURE KNOWS NO BORDERS
The themed trail provides information about the natural environment of the Hirschbichl Pass, the ecological network, biodiversity and the habitats water, forest, alm and rock as well as the historic and current use of the area at the border crossing. There are also interactive stations such as a stepping-stone biotope, a drystone wall and a game to play. The trail is suitable for children's prams and can also be used by guests with limited mobility.
Barefoot please! Out of your hiking boots and onto the barefoot path. Experience and feel various different surfaces up close and give the soles of your feet a massage. Afterwards you can cool your feet off in the Kneipp facility.
