Via ferratas in the Salzburger Saalachtal

On Iron Paths to the Peaks

8 via ferratas of all difficulties await you in the Salzburger Saalachtal. 4 via ferratas are found in the mountain climbers’ village of Weißbach in the valley. Two routes as well as a climbing school are found in the Loferer Steinberge and one is situated in the Reither Steinberge. You can choose the ideal route of a suitable difficulty level depending on your own experience and stamina.

Via ferratas in Weissbach

The 4 Gämse (chamois) make up the quartet of via ferratas in the mountain climbers’ village of Weißbach. The beginners’ via ferrata “Gams Kitz” (difficulty A/B) and „Zahme Gams“(difficulty B-C) gives you a taste for the sport. The „Weiße Gams“, (difficulty D), requires more ability while the „Wilde Gams“ (difficulty E-F) is only suitable for via ferrata experts. It is one of the most difficult routes in the whole of Austria.

Altitude: 90 metres

Zahme Gams

Difficulty: B-C (Easy-Moderate)

Duration: approx. 60 min.

Altitude: 110 metres

Weiße Gams

Difficulty: D (Moderate-Difficult)

Duration: approx. 50 min.

Altitude: 130 metres

Wilde Gams

Difficulty: E/F (Very Difficult)

Duration: approx. 70 min.

Altitude: 110 metres

Via ferratas in the Loferer Steinberge

The high alpine “Nackter Hund” climb leads up to the 2504 m high Mitterhorn, the second highest peak in the Loferer Steinberge. From the summit you can see the main ridge of the Hohe Tauern and the Berchtesgaden mountains (via ferrata, 300 metres ascent, difficulty C/D). The “Wilder Hund” climb was constructed by the Alpinskischule Markus Hirnböck. . With a difficulty grading D, the climb is a fantastic addition to climbing “Nackter Hund” and, in combination with it, leads to the summit “Hinterhorn”. If time is too short, a descent via the Wehrgrubenjoch is also possible without any problems. Via ferrata equipment can be hired from the Schmidt-Zabierow hut after pre-ordering by telephone.

Duration: approx. 60 min.

Altitude: 150 metres

Wilder Hund

Difficulty: D (Moderate-Difficult)

Duration: approx. 70min.

Altitude: 160 metres

Climbing School in the Loferer Steinberge There is a training area for beginners near the Schmidt-Zabierow Hut with three short via ferratas from difficulty A up to E. In addition there is also an exciting ropeway offering a real thrill in the Steinberge.

Duration: approx. 35min.

Altitude: 45 metres

Via ferrata in the Reither Steinberge

The via ferrata Wagendrischlhorn is found in the Reiter Steinberge. To reach the via ferrata an ascent of around 1000 m awaits but then you will be rewarded with a short via ferrata (difficulty B/C) and first class visibility far into the distance.

Duration: approx. 5,5h. (Way up 2,5h | Way down 2,5h | Via ferrata 0,5h) Altitude: 45 metres
