SUP-Tour on the Almsee – Stand Up Paddling in Salzburger Land
SUP action on the mountain lake
A unique combination of water sports and mountain adventure: gliding over the still waters of the Almsee high up in the Almenwelt Lofer on stand up paddle boards. Families can also take their first laps of the mountain lake with an experienced SUP instructor.
We pull the boards into the water and take up the basic position on the tip-resistant boards. Toby explains, “We stand on the middle of the board with feet a shoulder width apart and with knees loosely bent. The upper body remains upright when we put the paddle in the water next to the point of the board and we pull it towards the body near to the board. After a couple of paddles we swap sides so we don’t travel in a circle.“
At first we plunge the paddle timidly into the water because we have to fight to keep our balance. Mum laughs as she tries to paddle in a straight line but the board keeps turning in a circle. Toby helps with tips and soon we get the hang of it. I feel safer and safer on the board and overconfidently try to move nearer the tip of the board. Of course I land in the clear water with a loud splash. The gleeful laughing of my wife greets me as I surface. “Wait“, I call and pull on her board until she also falls into the water. Back on the SUP our awe of the water has now gone. We try out our first turning manoeuvres under instruction from Toby and we travel across the Almsee at ever increasing speed.
Saalachtour for beginners and experts
At the end of the course we all agree, “We definitely want to try out paddling on the river!” We arrange a tour on the Saalach for the coming days straightaway and on the way back to the cable-car station Toby explains, “On the upper part of the Saalach the whole family can ride on a fantastic route with a high adrenaline factor.
On the other hand, SUP-experts will find a perfect route on the world championship course in Lofer with rapids and rollers. I am also an organizer of the SUP European Championship here on the Saalach. If you want to see how the professionals master their SUP then make a note of the date because the Lofer Rodeo takes place from 16th to 17th September. There you can really admire top class sporting achievements on the SUP board.”
