Review of the Lofer Rodeo 2019
Record number of Participants, a wild party and A Paddler Protest
Night paddling, Boater X, boathouse party, protest ride – these were the four ingredients for a successful Lofer Rodeo weekend, which took place from the 13th to 15th September 2019 under a clear blue sky with perfect water levels in the Salzburger Saalachtal.
The Lofer Rodeo 2019 opened with the annual night paddle and the relaxed Riverbar on the slalom course. Accompanied by cool music, a laser show began at a later hour this year providing a great vibe which exceeded the expectations of the spectators and paddlers.
LOFER RODEO 2019: better attended than ever
The demand for starting places also exceeded all expectations. The 180 start numbers were sold out on Friday evening just before midnight! This year there were paddlers from Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Slovakia, Netherlands and New Zealand.
At 10 am on Saturday, the time trials for the coveted Boater X head-to-head slots began. In the afternoon the fastest 64 men and top 16 women took part in the battle for the Lofer Rodeo Trophy in Boater X. In unbelievable scenes, Matthias Weger from Austria deservedly won the men's competition. The large number of 32 registered starters in the women's competition was a fantastic achievement even before the race began. The exciting show was also spectacular, with the ladies offering merciless battles, close finishes and amazing interludes. In the end, the 26-year-old Paulina Kodadova Zasterova from the Czech Republic defended her win from last year. Eduard Doskocil from the Czech Republich won the canoeing (C1 and OC1) competition.
This year, the Lofer Rodeo also served as the final of the Austrian Boater X Cup. Here, Marcel Bloder beat Gernot Wenzel to the overall victory. The audience winners were undoubtedly the four old-school boys from the Prijon Pro Team, who set off before the final heats to great cheers from the spectators. In their spectacular race, they paid tribute to the past not only with their stylish outfits and original equipment, but also with their full physical commitment.
A Long party night without a shortage
After the shortage of beer last year, the Whitewater Slaves e.V. ordered 1000 litres of beer for the boathouse party in the Schaferstadl – and despite the enormous rush, the party guests did not manage to conquer the barrels until the early morning hours. After the prize ceremony, the tombola and the traditional raffling of a kayak began. 3 names were drawn from a hat and then the fight for a brand-new “Black Jack” from Spade was decided in a basketball match. Afterwards DJ Maqua provided the soundtrack for a long night and countless blurred memories of the party.
Water is Life – Save the Saalach
On Sunday lunchtime, everyone returned to the Saalach for something serious. A second protest ride on the Saalach, organized by the AKC, was held on the 15th September 2019 in Unken to protest against the planned construction of a hydroelectric power plant on the Saalach. Around 200 paddlers, rafters and SUP paddlers came and rode together, with loud whistles and a lot of media interest, along part of the affected route.
